If you happen to know any of us here at TRAVLETE, then you might know that we like to do something crazy every now and then. And once in a blue moon, we get something right and it ends up being quite fun. Well, last year we thought we’d ring in the New Year by running from the heart of NYC to Coney Island for the notorious Polar Bear Plunge. And you know what? We were right; it was an incredibly rad experience.
So this year we’re doing it all over again. For the second year, TRAVLETE is sponsoring Philip & Bill’s annual New Year’s Day Run-n-Plunge.
What is the Run-n-Plunge? Simply put, it’s a FREE multi-sport challenge in which a bunch of crazy athletes run from Manhattan to Coney Island, where we strip down to our skivvies and take a refreshing dip in the Atlantic Ocean as part of New York City’s notorious Polar Bear Plunge.
So if you’re a NYC local in search of a better way to ring in 2012 than hanging out with Dick Clark Ryan Seacrest, REGISTER and join us for what promises to be your new New Year’s Day tradition.
Here are the details. Please note that there are 18, 12, and 6 mile options.
Sunday – January 1st, 2012
9:00AM: We split into 3 groups (based on pace) and depart from the Apple Store at 59th St and 5th Ave in midtown Manhattan [distance to Coney Island - 18 miles]
10:00-ish: Running contingent picks up fellow Plungers from west end of Brooklyn Bridge [12 miles]
11:00-ish: Ever increasing running contingent reaches south west corner of Prospect Park - Brooklyn (Park Circle). [6 miles]
12:00-ish: Running contingents arrives at Coney Island and thinks to themselves that this may have been a bad idea.
1:00PM: We strip down and we plunge!
A few other notes:
We will offer three running groups to accommodate all levels of runners and paces, right from start. That said, if you have any doubts about running 18 miles, we suggest joining in at the foot of the Brooklyn Bridge for the 12 mile option. Last year it was the perfect distance for many first-timers!
We will provide a van to transport gear and dry/warm clothing from the start & meeting points to Coney Island.
This isn’t a Boston Marathon qualifier.
If the idea of ice cold water scares you or if you’re on the fence, you can find more info about the Polar Bear Club here.
You can use the N, Q, F, or D trains to return to Manhattan.
This run is NOT sanctioned, and participation is entirely at your own risk. We will be running along city streets, and participants are required to honor all relevant traffic and pedestrian rules and regulations. TRAVLETE is NOT responsible for your personal gear, if you get lost, hurt, or killed. That said, if you have an awesome time and don’t die, give us props!
This is a free event. However, the Polar Bear Club asks for donations to Camp Sunshine. You can learn more about it on their site.
So that’s it. Now you have all the details, so rally your friends and SIGN UP!
